City Spotlights

Whether through investing in community-based programmes, coordinating city agencies and civil society actors to proactively address grievances that extremist groups seek to exploit, or simply condemning hate – regardless of its form – where it manifests, mayors and local governments more broadly are driving inspiring policies and programmes to prevent and respond to hate, extremism and polarisation. This City Spotlights library is inspired by the many contributions that cities across the world are making to addressing these threats

How to use the City Spotlights library

The library provides bite-sized, accessible examples of city-led action against hate, extremism and polarisation. The purpose is not only to exemplify the role of local governments in addressing these and related threats, but also to inspire other cities that seek to deploy their own prevention policies and programmes. The library is a living resource – new spotlights will be added regularly and existing spotlights will be updated as appropriate.

The library supplements other Strong Cities resources, such as our Guide for Mayors and our Guide for Cities, which provide practical guidance, case studies and recommendations to help mayors and local governments prevent hate, extremism and polarisation.
