Project launch: Mapping City-Level P/CVE Needs and Priorities across the African Continent

The Strong Cities Network (SCN) team is excited to announce the launch of our EU-funded project   Mapping City-Level P/CVE Needs and Priorities across the African Continent.  This project, which will run from February – September 2022, is part of our wider effort to focus more attention on the role the cities and other local authorities across Africa can play in building resilience against and otherwise preventing extremist- and hate-motivated violence and polarisation. It will also inform SCN’s expanded engagement across the continent.

With the right support, African cities can respond to the needs of their citizens in ways that can build community trust and social cohesion while providing security and protecting democratic valuesHowever, while there is growing recognition not only about the important role of cites and their untapped potential for supporting their communities on these issues   the barriers to realizing it remain. A core piece of this project involves identifying the barriers to increased city-level involvement in preventing extremist- and hate-motivated violence and polarisation in Africa.

The project will map the needs and priorities of African cities for addressing these challenges and produce a report with recommendations that will inform the expansion of SCN’s future work and wider city-focused engagement in responding to these challenges across the continent. The project targets city and other local leaders and practitioners, as well as local civil society – including youth and youth-focused organizations – researchers, national government officials, and representatives from multilateral organisations across North, West, East and Southern Africa.

This project will include interviews, virtual roundtables and in-person workshops, offering to create opportunities for these local, national, regional and international stakeholders to share their experiences and perspectives with the SCN team.

Initial virtual roundtables will be held on the following dates which you can register for here (please choose one within your region):

North and West Africa Roundtables (interpretation will be available in Arabic and French)

• Tuesday 15 March 14:00-15:00 GMT
• Wednesday 16 March 14:30-15:30 GMT

East and Southern Africa Roundtables (interpretation will be available in French and Swahili)

• Wednesday 16 March 13:00-14:00 GMT [16:00-17:00 EAT]
• Tuesday 22 March, 13:00-14:00 GMT [16:00-17:00 EAT]
