Cities Leading Change Across North America

Strong Cities launched its North America Regional Hub in 2024 to foster city-led efforts to address all forms of hate, extremism and social polarisation and to strengthen social cohesion. Through in-person and online convenings, exchanges and trainings, the Hub enables local leaders and city officials to share best practices, strengthen their prevention efforts and build stronger, more resilient communities.  

Impact at a Glance 

• 50+ member cities across Canada and the United States 
• 30+ local, regional and virtual convenings since 2024 across the region 
• Four sustained technical assistance initiatives to build capacity in 30 municipalities  
• First-of-their-kind local convenings of local government and community-based stakeholders to discuss hate prevention and social cohesion 
• 700+ local leaders and city officials, and community-based practitioners reached 

Building Local Government Capacity 

• City-wide workshops, held in Boise (Idaho, USA), Brampton (Ontario, Canada) and Edmonton (Alberta, Canada), among other cities, that brought together city leaders, community-based organisations, police and practitioners to discuss how to prevent hate and maintain social cohesion in the midst of local, national and global crises
• Webinar series on Introduction to Prevention covering the basics of whole-of-society approaches to prevention, including multi-actor coordination, community engagement and primary prevention techniques 
• Global Crises, Local Impacts webinar series that delivers promising practices from member cities and subject matter experts to more than 1,200 mayors, local leaders, city officials and subject matter experts 
• Practical toolkits, guides and online resources are available for all to access, including a toolkit on Addressing Anti-Government Hate and Harassment 

Promoting City-to-City and Peer-to-Peer Learning 

• Regional and international convenings in Columbus (Ohio, USA), New York (New York, ISA), Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada) and Victoria (British Columbia, Canada), bringing together dozens of elected local leaders and city officials to exchange on topics ranging from addressing the underreporting of hate incidents to building trust with and across communities and to strengthening prevention-related cooperation  
• Annual Mayoral Retreat with the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, gathering 100+ mayors and city leaders from around the country to share and learn from one another 

Operating Sustained Technical Assistance Initiatives 

• Co-developed multi-actor local prevention frameworks with several small- and mid-sized cities across the United States, culminating in a step-by-step guide for cities interested in developing their own framework tailored to their specific needs
• Launched three Prevention Academies in Canada and the United States, providing monthly learning modules, peer dialogues and one-to-one technical support to help elected leaders and local government officials from participating cities to understand and identify threats, needs and vulnerabilities related to hate and targeted violence and operationalise a public health approach to prevention and response
