Young Cities in Mombasa, Kenya

The SCN and YouthCAN teams met with the County Government, youth and local CSOs in Mombasa, Kenya last week, in preparation for an upcoming Young Cities workshop.

Further expanding upon ISD’s expertise and portfolio in East Africa, Young Cities Mombasa will be held at the end of November. The programme aims at increasing the capacity of youth to harness their own energy and know-how to design effective online and offline campaigns to support community-wide resilience to extremism, hate and polarisation.

In parallel, the campaigns developed during the most recent installment of Young Cities across Lebanon, are successfully being rolled out online in Saida (Ain el Helweh), Tripoli, and offline in Majdal Anjar.

The same week in November will see SCN’s next City Exchange, between Mombasa, Kenya, and Kristiansand, Norway. Both cities have developed a strong bilateral relationship over the past two years through the SCN, discussing their experiences in dealing with extremism and violence. Governor Joho of Mombasa and Mayor Furre of Kristiansand’s delegations are preparing for two days of sharing best practices to implement a holistic P/CVE plan, culminating in a formal Memorandum of Understanding for increased cooperation through SCN.

These plans build upon the fruitful relationship built between SCN and Mombasa County. Governor Joho and his cabinet have participated in every SCN Global Summit held since the launch of the network in 2015, as well as the East and West Africa regional workshop in 2017. The Governor most recently gave one of the opening keynotes of the 2018 Summit in Melbourne, reiterating his support for the mission of SCN and his belief in the power of cities to work to prevent all forms of extremism.
